Millennials aren’t incurable job-hoppers, Gen X isn’t so jaded, and Baby Boomers aren’t all about material rewards

June 28, 2016 (San Francisco, Calif.) –Many business leaders worry about how to manage the multiple generations in today's workplace. But the solution for creating a great place to work for all ages is a simple one of trust, pride and camaraderie. And such great workplace cultures are great for business results as well.

That's the good news as consulting firm Great Place to Work®, in partnership with Time Inc.'s Fortune, announces the 2016 Best Workplaces for MillennialsGenXers and Baby Boomers. Great Place to Work®'s research involved surveying more than 230,000 employees at 620 organizations. The results challenge much of the typical talk about how distinctive the three generations are—and what a headache it is to manage all of them at once.

For example, Millennials are often portrayed as promiscuous job-hoppers, lacking the loyalty of their elders. But Great Place to Work® data shows that when Millennials' expectations of an excellent company culture are met, they are more than willing to stay. Millennials who feel they're at a great workplace are an incredible 25 times more likely to plan a long-term future at their workplace.

And overall, the new research found employees of all ages are looking for similar things in a great workplace: a company they can be proud of, connections with their colleagues, and honest, ethical leaders.

"There are more similarities than differences when it comes to what different generations want in a great workplace," says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work®. "Our research shows that company pride, a sense of community and competent, ethical leadership can bring Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers together for a great, high-performing workplace."

Topping the list of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials is digital marketing firm Elite SEM, while Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants ranked as the top workplace for Gen X and auto finance company Credit Acceptance took the top spot on the list of the best workplaces for Baby Boomers. Home builder David Weekley Homes and business software provider Workday appeared on all three lists.

Great Place to Work® will host a webinar on the subject of great workplaces for Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers on July 14 at 10am PT/1pm ET. Those attending will have early, exclusive access to additional Great Place to Work® research related to the generations and great workplaces.

The Best Workplaces for Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers are part of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work® and Fortune based upon employee survey feedback from Great Place to Work®-certified organizations.

About the Research and the Best Workplaces for Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers

The findings mentioned in this release arose as Great Place to Work® produced lists of the 2016 Best Workplaces for Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers. To view those lists, click here. Great Place to Work® defines Millennials as those born in 1981 or later, Gen Xers as those born between 1965 and 1980, and Baby Boomers as those born between 1946 and 1964. The lists and statistics for the report are based on results from the 58-question Trust Index© Employee Survey, which measures levels of trust, pride and camaraderie in the workplace. Great Place to Work examined Trust Index© results of over 230,000 employees at 620 companies certified as Great Workplaces by Great Place to Work®. Companies needed to employ at least 50 people in the generation being considered, and their survey results needed to achieve a 95% confidence level with a 5% or less margin of error in order to be eligible. Those companies with the highest Trust Index© scores for employees of the different generations compared to peer organizations of the same size earned a place on the lists.
